We are seeking a Assistant Manager Gift Shop - Volunteers that will support the manager to assure the profitable, compliant and smooth operation of the volunteer-run gift shop. This daily, hands-on role is essential for the day-to-day operations of the Providence gift shop(s) which operate to benefit the charitable works of the Medical Foundations. The assistant manager must maintain excellent working/supervisory relationships with 70 volunteers. Coaching, training, disciplinary action are all part of this role.

Assistant Manager functions at the direction of and in place of the Manager as necessary.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Supervise product merchandising and display

  • Order and maintains adequate supply of frequently sold merchandise

  • Be responsible for the appearance of the Gift Shop(s), assures that they are clean, dusted, and appropriately maintained for merchandising purposes

  • Assure volunteer support is utilized for maintaining the merchandising in the windows and throughout the gift store

  • Maintain appropriate inventory level for frequently sold merchandise

  • Oversee pricing of inventory by volunteer personnel

  • Assist with periodical physical inventory

  • Maintain security at all times in the observances of standard procedures

  • Assist with appropriate marketing strategies and communications with customers

  • Create professional fliers, signs, emails and all other gift shop promotions

  • Provide direction and oversight of gift shop volunteers

  • Assist with maintaining appropriate staffing levels on a daily basis for sales and inventory

  • Implement and communicate policies and procedures established by the Manager

  • Provide training to new gift shop volunteer staff. Implements, maintains and updates Gift shop procedure book

  • Maintain daily oversight and organization of storage room, office, and storage space

  • Perform duties of the gift shop cashier as needed to maintain adequate staffing levels

  • Complete knowledge of the gift shop Point of Sale Register system

  • Train volunteers on operation of the front register and solves problems as they arise

  • Able to input data for new merchandise, receiving merchandise, make labels and run and print daily reports.

  • Assist with department functions


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Five (5) years of experience in retail sales, including marketing and display

  • Customer service experience

  • Volunteer management and/or HR background experience

  • Point of Sale computer experience

  • Familiarity with bookkeeping/accounting functions

  • High level organizational skills

  • Judgment skills to make independent decisions

  • High level of personal integrity

  • Able to relate effectively and compassionately with patients, visitors, customers, volunteers, employees and vendors

  • Excellent math skills

  • Able to work in a fast-paced, customer service-orientated environment

  • Able to manage/prioritize multiple functions and projects to best meet the needs of the department

  • Able to respond rapidly to changing priorities in a constantly changing and expanding environment

  • Strong leadership skills and a willingness to lead by example

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Merchandising, marketing and business education

  • Direct experience training volunteers and/or employees

  • Hospital experience

  • Keyboarding at 45 WPM and 10-key by touch skills
