Providence is calling a Cardiac Sonographer - Echocardiology (1.0 FTE, Days) to Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center in Oregon City, OR. This position will also work at Providence St. Vincent's Medical Center.

We are seeking a Cardiac Sonographer - Echocardiology that will perform cardiac ultrasound examinations according to physician's orders, utilizing a variety of complex ultrasound equipment. Objectively identifies the presence of or absence of disease utilizing a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Assists physicians with more invasive echocardiography examinations including, but not limited to, Transesophageal echocardiography, Trans-catheter echo guided procedures (location specific), pericardiocentesis, echo guided myocardial biopsies (location specific), contrast enhanced exams, exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiography. Has the ability to modify procedures, to meet special circumstances and/or provide clinically useful information on a cost-effective basis. Will comply with the standards set forth by the American Society of Echocardiography and departmental policies and procedures. This position requires shared coverage for stand by and call back emergency studies in the evenings and weekends. This may include shared regional coverage to other Portland facilities and or rotation through staffed weekend shifts.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in producing high quality diagnostic studies of ultrasound examinations, including record scans for permanent record; proper processing of images for interpretation and long term archival

  • Provide completed technical worksheet, images and pertinent clinical information necessary for interpretation to the reading physician

  • Create Echo exam worksheets/preliminary reports for Echo Reader

  • Be accountable for reaching hospital within 30-45 minutes when called for emergent callback examinations

  • Assist physician with procedures as needed

  • Process electronic reports according to departmental guidelines. (STAT exam notification to Reader/Cardiologist)

  • Monitor inventory of examination rooms, units and cleaning stations. Notifies lead sonographer of supply reordering

  • Function as part of the rotational on-call staff, as required

  • Prepare exams for interpretation to include: correct identification, labeling of patient records and adequate clinical history

  • Provide preliminary report from exam following reporting policy and protocol (comments only to a Reader or cardiac surgeon)

  • Perform quality control and quality assurance per department policy

  • Respond and demonstrates flexibility to changes in the work schedule as determined by staffing and patient load

  • Patient Services:

  • Provide patient safety in accordance with policies and procedures

  • Review patient charts and orders to ensure correct exam

  • Communicate nature of ultrasound procedures to patients

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to patient modesty during transportation and table transfer

  • Monitor status and needs of patients by taking appropriate action

  • Strictly adheres to equipment disinfection/cleaning policies and procedures

  • Communication:

  • Demonstrate professional interactions, judgment and image with patients and staff

  • Handle specialized lab assignments, which may include: staff scheduling, research projects, office management, quality assurance/quality improvement and staff education

  • Regularly attends required meetings/in-services

  • Outreach Services:

  • The designated outreach sonographer will be required to travel to mobile echo sites primarily within the Portland service area as well as periodically within the Oregon region as requested by departmental leadership

  • Positions patients in a manner which is safe, utilizing the appropriate safe patient handling equipment and technique, allowing patients to be comfortable both physically and emotionally


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Registered Noninvasive Cardiovascular Ultrasound Technologist (RCS or RDCS) or registry-eligible

  • Appropriate state licensure

  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification

  • Current driver's license and Dependable transportation

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Associate's Degree in Applied Science, from a CAAHPE accredited school in Noninvasive Cardiovascular Technology, or Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

  • One (1) year experience performing cardiovascular ultrasound examinations, -OR- Minimum of 800 exams using all imaging modalities available

  • Pediatric echocardiography experience

  • Familiarity with imaging support of advanced heart failure patients (mechanical support devices)

  • Experience with echo guided trans-catheter procedures.
