We are seeking a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) - Mental Health Adolescent Child that will be a key person within the nursing unit, who provides overall administrative and technical assistance and support in the operation of the assigned nursing unit; and collaborates with other staff and leaders in the development, oversight, and operation of the unit. This position is the hub of all communication to and from the nursing unit; and greatly impacts the "tone" of the unit/shift.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Respond promptly and compassionately to patient needs communicated via the intercom system
Assess situation and prioritizes based on severity
Promptly relays needs to the nurse
Provide telephone coverage for unit; answers calls promptly and courteously; receives and distributes messages accurately and in a timely manner
Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
Assess unit activity flow and prioritizes workload appropriately
Provide administrative support to assigned unit; picks up and distributes daily mail; maintains bulletin boards; posts memos/schedules/communications in established locations
Coordinate and monitors patient charge card system; communicates any recommended changes in inventory levels and/or problems to Assistant Head Nurse/Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager, in collaboration with Distribution and Materials Management as necessary
Assemble admission packets; ensures open charts have adequate supply of forms; photocopies and faxes relevant documents for patient discharge
Transcribe provider orders in an accurate and timely manner
Perform data and order entry for scheduling patient treatments, diagnostics and related ancillary services
Enter unit charges into the computer and checks accuracy and completeness
Required qualifications for this position includes:
Medical terminology course -OR- equivalent education/experience
One (1) of experience performing secretarial duties in healthcare, or equivalent training in a recognized healthcare program
Experience with a variety of software applications
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
National Certification Health Unit Coordinator
One (1) year post High School education
Satisfactory completion of health unit coordinator coursework -OR- equivalent education/experience
Experience as a preceptor/role model
