Providence Health & Services RN - Infection Preventionist in Oregon City, Oregon


Providence is calling a RN - Infection Preventionist to Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center in Oregon City, OR. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), day shift position.

We are seeking a RN - Infection Preventionist who will expected to work autonomously within the designated region and ministries. All Infection Preventions (IPs) are accountable for implementation of and compliance with policies, practices and processes of Oregon Region Infection Prevention Program at a ministry, regional and system level. In collaboration with the IP regional director, IP medical directors, and IP peers, the IPs will all follow all current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. IPs provide infection prevention consultative services focused on providing the highest quality professional care at the lowest cost to patients and the organization.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities: :

  • Leadership:

  • Understand how people and organizations function and able to maneuver through complex political situations effectively

  • Rapidly respond to shifts in regulatory and accreditation requirements and emerging science

  • Effectively and efficiently manage and perform daily operations of infection prevention responsibilities as assigned

  • Serve as an educator and educational resource for health care providers, ancillary staff, patients, families, and the general public

  • Collaborate in the development and delivery of educational programs and/or tools that relate infection prevention, control, and epidemiology

  • Align infection prevention program goals with the organizations strategic priorities and annual operating plan

  • Utilize and synthesize scientific evidence, including methods for translating evidence into practice

  • Demonstrate understanding and utilize tones, tools and behaviors that promote patient safety in a highly reliable organization

  • Infection Prevention and Control:

  • Effectively apply surveillance definitions and methodologies essential to development of collection tools and gathering relevant surveillance data

  • Proficiency in understanding and selecting appropriate benchmarks for comparison, as well as literature review, supporting a proactive approach to setting infection reduction targets and thresholds

  • Develop a surveillance plan based on the population(s) served, services provided, and previous surveillance data

  • Evaluate as identified by regulatory agencies (TJC, CMS, etc.) and as needed; the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modifies as necessary

  • Maintain knowledge of current infection prevention trends/best practices and collaborates with National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), reporting healthcare infections using defined CDC criteria

  • Align, evaluate, and revise infection prevention plans with results of infection risk assessments

  • Reduce infection through consultative input in collaboration with physical plant, materials management, and health care providers in patient care areas

  • Technology:

  • Surveillance of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAI) utilizing systematic data collection, collation, analysis, and dissemination of key findings to providers to improve performance

  • Develop and utilize complex data tables; teach others to refine data display and reporting. Collaborate with OR Quality Analytic Reporting (QAR) to define collection and reporting methodologies

  • Incorporate information technology and systems applications in the analysis and dissemination of data

  • Consult and evaluate cost-effectiveness of advances in current technology, products, software, or changes in practice as they relate to infection prevention

  • Performance Improvement/Implementation:

  • Act as an agent of change and participates in the change process

  • Assist with leading the organization's infection prevention and control improvement activities

  • In conjunction with physicians and infection control staff develop regional standardized policies, procedures, standards, protocols, and evidenced-based best practices for all activities of the Infection Prevention Program


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing -OR- an MD graduate/educated in (foreign country or US) may also be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor Degree in Nursing

  • Four (4) years clinical experience

  • Demonstrated experience in communicating effectively, verbally and in writing, with administrators, physicians, nursing, public and all levels of hospital personnel

  • Current, unencumbered Oregon state RN license

  • Certification in Infection Control required upon hire, or must be obtained within two (2) years of hire

  • Knowledge of current microbiology, infectious diseases, antimicrobial therapy, immunizations, aseptic technique, and patient care practices

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing -OR- Public Health.

  • Strong background in sterilization, disinfection and sanitation methods in a healthcare facility

  • Working knowledge of national databases and/or programs

  • Knowledge of epidemiological principles, statistical methods and analysis of infection prevention and control data
